EMMA MURPHY MIACP – Why I Developed the  ‘Eating Freely’ Online Program

Over my 10+ years as a disordered eating specialist therapist, I developed the Eating Freely Program.    Working as I did with women and men struggling with Emotional and Comfort Eating, Binge-Eating and Bulimia, both in a group setting and individually for over ten years, I realized how difficult it was for some clients with Binge Eating Disorder to come forward and ask for help, and in particular for men with any form of eating distress or body image issues.

Did you know that up to 30% of adults seeking weight loss support meet the criteria for Binge Eating Disorder? You will NEVER find the help you need through a diet or exercise program – because it is not about food, it is about feelings. That’s why it is called Emotional Eating.

Clients with any form of disordered eating have a similar personality type.  They tend to be perfectionistic, high achieving and think in a very black and white, all or nothing way.  Clients also tend to be seen as the ‘strong’ person in their family or social group, the person everyone else turns to with their problems.  

It is therefore very difficult for them to admit that THEY have a problem, and most clients have an absolute fear or dread of appearing vulnerable or needy to people in their lives.   Over time I realised that no matter how ‘good’ I was at my work, or how many other therapists I trained in the Eating Freely way of working, there would always be women and men out there who desperately needed or wanted help… but were too afraid to come forward and ask for that support in person.
