What is Holistic Massage Therapy?

The term “Holistic” comes from the Ancient Greek word “holos,” which means “whole.”   Holistic massage therefore treats the ‘whole person’ – bringing your body, mind and spirit into balance.

Holistic Massage is an integrative technique, bringing different techniques together to relax the body’s muscles and soft tissue, releasing tension and stress.  Massage therapy has been shown to improve immunity, improve  blood circulation, help the flow of nutrients through the body – clearing any blockages – and eliminate toxins.

Holistic Massage is a soothing, relaxing treatment.   Reducing the cortisol or stress hormone in your system,  it is designed to deliver overall wellbeing.  It also strengthens the immune system by bringing more white blood cells into the circulation system, and this in turn helps to fight infection.

What is Lomi Lomi Massage Therapy?

Lomi lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage that uses a combination of massage techniques, oils, and sometimes elements of prayer, breathing and movement (by the Therapist) to restore energy and soothe the body.

Lomi Lomi massage works gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes, allowing the recipient to truly relax and release tension, toxins and old energies which can be stored in the body.

Lomi lomi works from the perpective that memories are not just stored in the brain and mind, but also in every cell of the human body – the body remembers.  The long, continuous strokes of the massage are designed to help the body let go of its old patterns and behaviours, which can often contribute to or even be at the root of psychological distress. Lomi Lomi massage can be a powerful releasing experience for clients with trauma.

In Hawaii, lomi lomi is used to treat children with upset stomachs and soothe women in labour.

Before you go

It is helpful if you have some free time after a lomi lomi massage, as the oils used in massage are not great for your hair or make up. An appointment either later in the day when you are going straight home or do not have anything else planned is worth thinking about.

It is common too that lomi lomi massage may bring up strong emotions and memories. This is generally not upsetting, but freeing, as the body is releasing the memory.

Avoid eating heavy meals or drinking alcohol in the hours leading up to your massage.

You will be in a deep state of relaxation after this beautiful massage experience. It is best to be able to go home, relax and drink plenty of fluids after a treatment. Try not to eat heavy foods or drink alcohol after the treatment, instead drink plenty of water and have an early night.
