Risky Behaviours
Many people have trouble coping with the realities of their life. They may try to escape these feelings by engaging in activities that offer a quick high. These activities such as alchohol and drug use, gambling, smoking, shopping, shoplifting, internet use and sex only offer a temporary escape from their problems, but don’t solve the problem itself.
For many these behaviours offer a short-term escape from the realities of life, and often develop as a way of masking, or avoiding, anxieties and depression.
The long-term results of these behaviours are feelings of shame or guilt, isolation from family or friends, secrecy and deceit, and often difficult financial consequences such as debt fraud and even stealing.
HOW CAN WE HELP?
Counselling can be an effective form of treatment for anyone trapped in a cycle of engaging in risky behaviours. Counselling will help you to recognise your problem and begin to understand it. A chance to look at acknowledging your real emotional needs and examining the underlying causes can be an excellent foundation to building a new, healthier way of living. Individual counselling also offers the chance to build self-esteem and self-respect, usually resulting in the behaviours not being needed any more as a crutch to lean on in difficult times.
Lisa Lennon
BA (Hons) Counselling & Psychotherapy.
Since qualifying as a counsellor/psychotherapist, Lisa has been volunteering with the counselling department of various Dublin Institutes of Technology. Here she worked with a variety of age groups and issues, including, anxiety, depression, stress, family issues, addiction, sexual abuse, grief and isolation.
Lisa has a keen interest in the area of crisis pregnancy and post abortion counselling. She offers a safe, understanding and non judgemental space for anyone facing a crisis pregnancy to explore all the emotions and challenges such an experience may bring.
Lisa has a strong and passionate belief in the power of therapy and believes that everyone has the ability within to overcome whatever challenges life may present them with. By offering an integrative therapeutic approach Lisa aims to allow the client to discuss and explore areas in her life they are struggling with, set goals to help relieve these issues and develop life skills to help them avoid such issues again.
“If I can provide a certain type of relationship, the other person will discover within himself the capacity to use that relationship for growth, and change and personal development will occur.” Carl Rogers – Psychotherapist.
